Flying Pig Half Training Recap: Week 5 (3/27-4/2)
Well, I fell a week behind on my updates so you’ll get TWO posts today! Woohoo!
This week’s focus:
28+ miles for the week plus 2 strength workouts – I wanted to see if I could fit it all in.
4 easy miles. I was supposed to meet up with Hannah to run at a park, but there were storms in the forecast so we decided it was better to cancel than to get the all the kids in the stroller and then get rained out. So, when the clouds broke up, I ended up taking the kids out on my own and hustling through 4 easy miles with the double stroller so I could get back and finish putting my IKEA dresser together. 🙂
Strength day. My sister came over for a strength workout, but I convinced her we should run 2 miles first 🙂 So, we just did 2 easy stroller miles in the neighborhood and then lifted weights at home.
Pace checker speed workout. All the momming things got in the way of this workout. I was going to meet up with Hannah, but that didn’t work out because of illnesses, then I was going to try to run outside, but I couldn’t make the timing work where I could do it without the stroller. So I ended up on the treadmill with Baby L in the play pen and a pile of laundry on the workout bench next to me. I don’t know how, but somehow I put together a warm up, 8x800m at race pace with 1 minute of rest in between, and a cool down for a total of 5 miles on the treadmill. It was tough (more because I was feeling mentally defeated than anything), but it felt good to know I could complete it all at my goal pace.
Rest day with a little strength workout.
Easy 4 miles. Back to the treadmill. The weather has been so weird lately. Either rainy or cold or super windy. I normally just pop the weather shield on the stroller and head outside in all kinds of weather, but Baby L has struggled with ear infections so I’m being super careful lately.
Long run 9 miles outside with double stroller/treadmill. I wanted to cry several times during this workout and it had nothing to do with the actual running. Baby L has been experiencing some weird tummy issues (Hubby is lactose-intolerant and I’m praying that’s not the case for little man!!) so it’s kept me from taking him in long runs in the stroller. When there’s a dirty diaper I need to change it asap or he gets a diaper rash. But the idea of 9 miles on a treadmill is a nightmare for me so I decided to just give it a shot and we’d get as far as we could. I made it 4 miles outside before we needed a new diaper. This wouldn’t have been a big deal except that E fell asleep 10 minutes before we had to go home. So I now had the dilemma of a 1-year-old needing a diaper change versus a 3-year-old who is resisting naps and had just fallen asleep. The diaper change won and I woke E up. This, of course, makes for a cranky pre-schooler for the rest of the day. I considered putting the run off until Sunday, but I knew that the chance of the same thing happening was pretty high so I just waited until Baby L’s second nap and hopped on the treadmill to finish the other 5. Not my idea of fun. My pace was awful. But it got done.

That brings me to 26.5 miles for the week and 2 strength workouts. Just 1.5 mile short of my goal, but I’m not upset about it. I pushed through some hard things this week and I haven’t been sleeping well so I’ll call this one a win.
